Desolation Sound Overview:
The sheltered waters of Desolation Sound, B.C.’s largest marine park, make an ideal beginner kayak trip. The waters are protected and calm, the scenery is stunning and varied, and it gets long, hot days from late spring through to early fall. Vancouver Island is so large that the tides do not reach in the back making the waters in Desolation Sound the warmest on the coast. You will encounter birds of all types including bald eagles, murrelets and great blue herons. As well as seals, the occasional sea otter and a rich intertidal life from starfish to clams, oysters, urchins and more. The water is clear and clean. The topography varies from the relatively low rolling hills of the Gifford Peninsula to the Unwin Range rising over 1,400 metres (4,500 feet) directly behind the islets of Prideaux Haven. It really is a microcosm of all that is best about life on B.C.’s west coast.
